North Tipperary Juvenile Handball Championship Finals

The 2018 North A 40x20 Handball finals were hosted  by Nenagh  on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th January  following a number of quarter-finals and semi-finals taking place in the week preceding this.

6 clubs contested the finals - Ballina, Ballinahinch, Lahorna, Nenagh, Newport and Youghalarra.

On Friday the first action was from our U16 girls doubles, where the Ballina pairing took the hounours. Then Ballinahinch won the BU14D and BU15D with Lahorna winning the BU15S and receiving a walkover in the BU16S.

Saturday started with our remaining girls’ games – Lahorna won the GU10S, GU11S and GU11D, G12D and G13D with Youghalarra winning the G12S.

The boys’ games started at midday – Ballina won B10S and B12D; Lahorna won B13S, Nenagh won B11S and Youghalarra won B10D and B12S.

Some great displays of handball were in evidence, with the Boys U13 singles final between Ballina and Lahorna providing the most exciting match of the Championships. They now go forward to contest the County Finals in Nenagh on W/E 13th./14th January.

Thanks must go to all who helped out in any way, especially the North Tipp Handball Board and all our referees over the 2 days – Pat Slattery, Ger Foley, David Kyne, Christy Carey, Mike Gleeson, Martin Spain and Eamonn Spillane.

Well done to all the players and their coaches, thanks also to all their parents who ferried them to and from the games!

2016-Munster 60X30 Juvenile Team of Six Championships:

The 2016-Munster 60X30 Juvenile Team of Six Championships involving Limerick, Tipperary and Cork, saw Tipperary defeat Limerick in the Semi Final and then claim the overall honours against their old rivals Cork in the Final. Thanks to John Noonan and Pat Murphy for refereeing  U12/13 Team of Six in Broadford.

This now brings down the curtain on the 2016-Munster 60X30 Juvenile season; it has been a busy period as there has been juvenile activity every week since the 20th August. Thanks to all the players who took part in the various competitions, juvenile reps in the counties, clubs who hosted games, OIC and referees at all the venues, parents, coaches, Peter Dennehy for organising medals, and everyone who helped out along the way.

Good luck to all the Girls and Boys, who will be representing Munster in 2016 All Ireland 60X30 Juvenile Championships-starting next week in the U14-U17 Singles/Doubles Championship games. The 60X30 Team Championships are scheduled for Saturday 22nd October, where Tipperary in the U12/13 section will be joined by Waterford in the U14/15 and U16/17 Team Sections.

2015-Munster Juvenile Handball U12 Mixed Team of Four:

The second leg of the 2015 Munster Juvenile Handball U12 Mixed Team of Four Tournament; took place in Nenagh on Sunday 13th December. Following on from last week’s games in Ballydesmond where twenty eight players in teams of four contested the first leg of this competition, the Nenagh side of  the competition comprised of six teams of  twenty four juveniles playing out a round robin format in two groups of three.

Teams played as two sets of doubles-two games of fifteen aces, under Cumann Na MBunscoil rules where service alternates after each five serves. The winners of  both groups played in a cup final; the runners up in both groups faced each other in a shield final with the third placed team in both groups contesting the plate final.

In the Cup Section: Team-[f] Edward Brennan/Jack Mulcahy; Amy McKeogh/Donagh McCarthy overcame Team-[b] Adam Fogarty/Pat Curtin; Yvonne Stack/Emily Gould 60-39.

In the Shield Section: Team-[c] Jack Shanahan/Kian Donnelly; Anna Mulcahy/Robert Shanahan took the honours against Team-[d] Conor McKelvey/Anthony Linehan; Aine Spain/Patrick Noonan 49-40

In the Plate Section: Team-[e] Robert McCarthy/David Ryan, Anna O Keefe/Eoin Carroll defeated Team[a] Rory Grace/Grainne O'Brien; Abbie Linehan/Evan O'Callaghan 48-46

A total of nine games involving eighteen doubles games were played over the course of the day , starting at 10 15am, and finishing at 3 30pm. A lot of preparatory goes in to organising any competition, along with the running off of the competition itself on the day. Many thanks to all of the following-Eamonn Spillane, Mary Spillane, Martin Spain, Eithne Spain, Joe Ryan, Clodagh Kelly and Sile Spain for their  organisation of the day; refereeing the games; feeding and catering duties; reporting of games/pictures;  and all those who helped out in any way over the course of the weekend. The outline of this tournament was floated at the last two Munster Juvenile Handball meetings, and it was decided to give it a run on the first two weekends of December this year. This competition was set up to give players a chance to play with girls and boys from different clubs as far as possible; looking at the numbers involved  over the two weekends-fifty two players,  it looks like a positive beginning to this U12 tournament. Looking forward to next weekend on Friday December 18th, the final 2015 Munster Juvenile handball coaching session goes ahead in Nenagh at 6pm

Munster 40X20 Primary Schools A-B Competition 2015:

The 2015-Munster 40X20 Primary Schools A and B Competition played last Sunday November 29th, saw Clare take the overall honours in both sections. Dungarvan hosting the A section saw five teams take part; Clare beat Kerry in a preliminary round game and then went on to play Cork in the game of the day which turned out to be a rip-roaring tie that saw Clare edge the match by 5 aces; the other semi final saw the host team-Waterford beat Tipperary; Clare then went on to defeat the hosts in the Final.

Two semi finals kicked off the day in the B Section played in Liscarroll; Clare got the better of Tipperary, and Cork beat Limerick; with the Final going the way of young Clare team against the young rebels.

This competition which was started in 2006 under the stewardship of Peter Dennehy, is now one of the most keenly contested and best supported competitons during the whole calendar year. Both venues were packed with supporters and players, and the standard of play on view by all Counties was most impressive with high scores on all sides.

Many thanks to the following; Dungarvan and Bro Finbar Spring, Pat Hayes, Joe Ryan, Ger Healy, Martin Spain:  Liscarroll handball club John Hedigan/Daniel Relihan-all the counties, players, supporters, referees, catererers and everyone who helped out over the course of the day

For players U12 in 60x30 the following rules apply; the service line [inside] shall be the short line; a ball reaching the back wall in service before the second hop shall be a “dead” ball and shall not count-i.e. there is no back wall during serve. Full rules thereafter. In all other grades full rules apply.

Juvenile Singles and doubles matches are for the best of three games of 15 points at U12; U13; U14 and U15 levels; and two games of 21 and a tie break to 11 at U16 and U17 level.
