Update: National Handball Centre

Following a recent meeting of GAA Handball Ard Comhairle meeting please find below an update in relation to the National Handball Centre.

Over the last few months, the centre had been used by the HSE as a walk-in testing centre in the fight against Covid-19. This arrangement finished in August and the centre was vacated by the HSE and deep cleaned. Over the past number of weeks, a number of meetings have been held in accordance with government guidelines to finalise matters in relation to the centre.

Following a recent request from the HSE, the centre will once again be used as a walk-in testing centre. Once the HSE have vacated the building the snag list can be completed and subject to government guidelines we will then be in a position to continue our efforts to open the facilities.

In terms of the operating of the centre, GAA Handball will be responsible for all Handball facilities, including the control of and booking of the courts. There will be an online system in place to facilitate the bookings of the courts and court bookings will be confined to registered GAA Handball members.

Information on how to book courts and the costs relating to same will be made available in the near future once all details have been finalised.

The National Handball Office will relocate to the new Handball centre and will be based there on a permanent basis once it is deemed safe to return to normal working practices.

In relation to the Bar/café and community facilities, Fintan Farrelly will be responsible for the booking of the bar/café area and the community centre.

We look forward to working alongside the local community in this fantastic new venture and we cannot wait to welcome our Handball members into the state-of-the-art facilities once the centre is open to the public.

GAA Handball President Dessie Keegan commented on the new centre:

“As the excitement builds around the imminent opening of our new National Handball Centre I feel it is appropriate to acknowledge the hard work John Kelly and his team have done to ensure that the finished product meets all the expectations of a world class sporting facility.

It has been a challenging process and I feel the Handball public owe John and his team a huge debt of gratitude for always going the extra mile for us. I would also especially like to thank Dermot Reilly who is representing GAA Handball and the GAA in delivering this National centre. Dermot sees the enormous potential that GAA Handball has to offer and he is continually working with us and the local community to ensure the future success of the  centre.“

Further updates will issue as developments occur

Pat Mc Kenna Stepped down from Chairman of the Tipperary Handball Board after serving for over 30 Years. In that time Pat has seen many great players representing Tipperary Handball bringing Provincial , National & International titles to the Premier County. Pat was never shy to speak his mind and availed of every opportunity to seek better support & facilities for our players . Pat O Flaherty from Youghalarra takes over as County Chairman and after the A.G.M. in the Sarsfield Club in Thurles the New Chairman made a presentation to the outgoing Chairman on behalf of the County Board.

Michael "Ducksie" Walsh who passed away early on Thursday 4th August 2016 following a short battle with illness.
Ducksie was a tremendous competitor, a sportsman par excellence and an iconic figure whose loss has left the entire handball community numb with grief. A winner of an incredible 38 Senior All-Ireland titles including a record 16 Senior Softball titles, winning 13 in a row from 1985-1997 - his name will forever be synonymous with the sport.

Walsh, who turned 50 in May  fell ill on the way home from a senior doubles tournament in Cavan last Saturday and passed away on Thursday  4th August 2016.

Ducksie  was on top of his game to the end. Just a fortnight ago, in the inaugural Irish 60x30 Singles Nationals in his home court of Talbot’s Inch, Walsh defeated number one-ranked Eoin Kennedy of Dublin in the final of the Open Singles.

GAA Handball are delighted to confirm the recipient of Gradaim an Uachtaráin 2015 which was presented at a special banquet in Croke Park on Friday last was Tim Healy from the Liscarroll Handball Club in Cork

The awards, organized with the support of club championship sponsors AIB, are staged annually by the GAA and provide the GAA President with an opportunity to acknowledge outstanding commitment and long service across the club and county network from people whose highly valued contribution is seldom recognised nationally.

Tim Healy has been one of the true stalwarts of Cork handball for well over a quarter of a century. While the club, and what was good for the club always came first with Tim, at County and Provincial level over the years when the need to put your  shoulder to the wheel arose, the challenge was never shirked by Tim, you could always count on him. Men like him don’t come along every day. The same applied when Tim, as a hurler  always  gave Liscarroll club outstanding service and in addition Tim worked in Golden Vale Foods who were one of the powerhouses of Inter – Firm Hurling from the sixties to the Eighties, he was an ever present with those teams.

As Tim moved on in years he continued to play handball and is a committed member of the Liscarroll club, he was to the fore when it was decided to convert the old 60/30 Alley into a 40/20 court, contributing to the work and effort to complete the project. Secretary for many years he did Trojan work and night after night Tim would be found in the handball court refereeing and organising games. He is still very active in his club ensuring that things are done properly; no task has ever been too big or too small for him.

Tim excelled as an administrator and in 1993 he was elected Chairman of Cork Handball Board, a position he held until 2009. During his tenure as Chairman Handball made great strides in Cork. He also served as Munster Council Chairman from 1998 to 2000. He remains as one of the Cork delegates to Munster Council where his wise council is highly respected.

He always had great interest in juvenile handball and was always encouraging young players at Club and County level. In the early 90s, the Munster Handball Council mooted the idea of organising a juvenile tournament over the Christmas/New Year and Tim volunteered to give it a go. Twenty years on and it is now among the best Juvenile Tournaments in the Country, with players from all Provinces competing over the 6 days. It now attracts over one hundred entries and runs from December 27th to January 1st each year.
